Terms of Service

Please read these Terms of Service carefully before using Float Exam. By accessing or using this application, you agree to be bound by these terms.

01Acceptance of Terms

By accessing, browsing, or using Float Exam ("the Application", "we", "us", or "our"), you ("User", "you") acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms") and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the Application.

These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and the Float Exam project maintainers.

02Description of Service

Float Exam is a free web application providing two primary tools:

  • Exam Hall Timer — A configurable countdown timer for invigilators, featuring reading/writing phases, audio chimes, spoken announcements, Picture-in-Picture overlay, and fullscreen projection support.
  • Student Study Hub — A personal dashboard for students to track exam countdowns, manage syllabus checklists, run Pomodoro focus sessions, and play ambient focus sounds.

The Application runs entirely in the browser. No server-side processing, user accounts, or cloud synchronization exists. All data persists locally in your browser's LocalStorage.

03License & Intellectual Property

The Application source code is released under the MIT License. You are free to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the software, subject to the license terms.

The "Float Exam" name, logo (geometric triangle with floating dot), and brand identity are not included in the MIT License. These brand assets are reserved and may not be used to endorse or promote derivative works without written permission.

Third-party dependencies (Astro, Tailwind CSS, Inter font, JetBrains Mono font, etc.) remain under their respective licenses.

04User Responsibilities

You agree to use the Application only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. Specifically, you agree not to:

  • Use the Application for any illegal or unauthorized purpose
  • Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Application
  • Inject malicious code, scripts, or content into the Application
  • Use the Application to disrupt examinations, assessments, or educational processes
  • Redistribute the Application under the "Float Exam" brand name without permission

You are solely responsible for verifying the accuracy of timer configurations before using them in live examination settings.

05Educational Use Disclaimer

Float Exam is provided as a timing aid for educational environments. It is not a certified examination management system and does not replace official invigilation procedures, institutional policies, or regulatory requirements.

  • The timer relies on the client device's system clock, which may be adjusted by the user
  • Audio alerts require user interaction to unlock browser audio context policies
  • Picture-in-Picture and fullscreen modes depend on browser support and permissions
  • LocalStorage data can be cleared by browser settings, private browsing, or user action

Institutions and invigilators should maintain independent timekeeping backups. Float Exam assumes no liability for examination disruptions caused by timer inaccuracies, device failures, browser limitations, or user error.

06Disclaimer of Warranties

THE APPLICATION IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not warrant that:

  • The Application will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free
  • Timer accuracy will meet any specific examination standard
  • Audio features will function on all devices or browsers
  • LocalStorage data will persist indefinitely
  • Defects will be corrected

07Limitation of Liability

IN NO EVENT SHALL THE FLOAT EXAM MAINTAINERS, CONTRIBUTORS, OR DISTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, RESULTING FROM YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE APPLICATION.

This limitation applies regardless of the legal theory (contract, tort, negligence, strict liability, or otherwise) and even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain damages, so this limitation may not apply to you in full.

08Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Float Exam maintainers and contributors from and against any claims, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs, or expenses (including attorney's fees) arising from or related to your use of the Application, violation of these Terms, or violation of any rights of third parties.

09Modifications to the Application & Terms

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Application (or any feature thereof) at any time without notice. We will not be liable to you or any third party for any modification, price change, suspension, or discontinuance.

These Terms may be updated periodically. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Application after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.

10Governing Law & Dispute Resolution

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction where the project repository is hosted, without regard to conflict of law principles.

Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the Application should be resolved informally where possible. Formal disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts in that jurisdiction.

11Severability

If any provision of these Terms is held to be unenforceable or invalid, such provision shall be changed and interpreted to accomplish the objectives of the original provision to the greatest extent possible under applicable law, and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
